Ticket touting isn’t what it used to be.

Years ago, it was someone outside the ground with a paper ticket.

Now it’s:

Instagram accounts

X and Facebook DMs

 WhatsApp sellers

“season ticket holders” you’ve never met

They look convincing.

They sound confident.

Some even show screenshots.

A lot of it is fake.

And every season, Chelsea supporters lose money.

What actually happens

Fans turn up at Stamford Bridge with:

QR codes that won’t scan

• tickets already used

bookings cancelled by the club

 screenshots that were never real

The worst part isn’t the money.

It’s explaining to your child why you’re not going in.

It’s illegal in the UK

Selling football tickets without permission is illegal.

That includes:

 selling above face value

selling without club authorisation

advertising unofficial ticket sales

Clubs cancel tickets linked to illegal resale.

No refund.

No sympathy.

No entry.

If you buy from a tout, you take that risk.

The £200 mistake supporters keep making

This is the part most people don’t understand.

Let’s say:

Face value of the ticket is £50

A seller asks for £200

You pay it

You’ve just paid four times the price for something that could be cancelled.

Now here’s the reality.

For around the same money, you could often buy an official hospitality ticket directly from Chelsea FC.

Hospitality packages can start from around £200 depending on the match.

That means:

 It’s sold by the club

It’s valid

It won’t be cancelled

You don’t need to gamble on a stranger

So instead of paying £200 for a £50 ticket that might not work, you could pay similar money and walk straight in through the official route.

Most supporters are never told that.

Overseas supporters are targeted the most

If you’re travelling from abroad, you’re a prime target.

Sellers know:

You’ve booked flights

You’ve paid for hotels

You’re under pressure

You don’t know the ticket system

They use urgency.

“I only have two left.”

“Need payment now.”

“Guaranteed entry.”

Then the ticket fails.

I’ve seen families travel thousands of miles and be turned away.

The safe route

It isn’t perfect.

But it works.

Buy through:

The official club website

Official memberships

The official ticket exchange

An Official Chelsea Supporters Club if you’re overseas

Supporters clubs receive legitimate allocations.

They work directly with the club.

Tickets are valid.

It takes planning.

But you get in.

Why this site exists

The Chelsea Matchday Brief exists to help supporters do this properly.

Not to promise miracles.

Not to sell shortcuts.

But to:

Explain how ticket sales actually work

Alert you when tickets go on sale

Warn you about common mistakes

Help you avoid losing money

Tickets are hard to get.

But losing hundreds to a stranger online should never be part of supporting your club.

Final word

If someone is pushing you in a DM, stop.

If the price is way above face value, stop.

If it isn’t from the club or an official supporters group, walk away.

Often the safe option costs the same.

Sometimes less.

And it always works.
